Después de realizar Minutes to Midnight, Linkin Park tuvo un periodo corto en el que Chester realizó un disco con una banda que se llama Dead by Sunrise. Después de esto se invitó a LP a colaborar para hacer una canción para la segunda película de Transformers (en la primera participaron con "What I've Done"), pero esta vez decidieron hacer una canción nueva, esta es "New Divide" que salió un poco antes que A Thousand Suns:
